| This is a story set in the mostly in the 1920's and told through the eyes of Grace, a ladies maid at Riverton House. But Grace then brings the reader back to her present day, the winter of 1999, where she is recording her life working for the Hartford family for her grandson Marcus who she feels is lost to her for a time. |

Grace is also visited by a young director making a film about a poet's suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long-consigned to the dark reaches of Grace's mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks.
Riverton Manor is a grand English country house and the home of Hannah and Emmeline Hartford. Theirs is a life of refinery and glittering society gatherings. But over the years Grace’s life becomes interwoven with both Hartford girls.
When a young poet on the eve of a glittering society party takes his own life and the only witnesses are Hannah and Emmeline it ensures both sisters will never speak to each other again.
This is a story of love found and love lost for both Grace and Hannah, and for one of them it is also a story of love reclaimed many years later.
There is something about this book that once you pick it up you just can’t put it down. If you love Upstairs Downstairs or Downton Abbey you will love this book.
I have to say that towards the end I had tears in my eyes as Grace Bradley’s life, slowly fades. The wonderful description by Kate Morton of her peaceful ending left me reaching for my tissues more than once.
The House at Riverton is a brilliant read, just right for curling up on the sofa with and letting your imagination do the rest. |
