| This book took me four days to read. In saying this it may make you think t I was enthralled by this read. But to be honest, as much as I think Philippa Gregory’s historical novels are utterly brilliant, this one left me wanting slightly. |

| I felt no sympathy for her struggle |

Set in 1453, Margaret Beaufort is the heiress to the Red Rose of Lancaster. She is a pious child, who at the age of nine has a sense of her own greatness. Forced into a marriage at the tender age of 12 and sent off to a remote part of Wales, she eventually gives birth to a son whom she names after the king, her cousin Henry.
Here begins the story of Margaret Beaufort’s attempt to put her son Henry Tudor on the English throne. Not an easy task given the overwhelming power of the York dynasty.
With no other choice but to send Henry into exile, Margaret pledges her son in marriage to her enemy Elizabeth Woodville. Devoted in her belief that Henry will become king she feigns loyalty to the usurper Richard III and masterminds one of the greatest rebellions of all time.
Margaret’s all consuming obsession and her sense of self-righteousness is fascinating. Her ruthless ambition and the fact she seems only to wish to sign herself Margaret Regina lead this reader to eventually dislike the main character.
I felt no sympathy for her struggle, and when she marries Lord Thomas Stanley, a man who will turn his coat at the last minute to save his own neck, she receives her just desserts in her eventual fall from grace with King Richard.
Of course the outcome of her ultimate triumph is well documented, but Gregory handles the scenes of the fateful events of August 1485 at Bosworth Fields with flair: the battle is brought to life in all its gory colour and details.
I’ve read the White Queen, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I felt this one dragged. Maybe it was my dislike of Margaret Beaufort or the fact I was suffering at the time with a flu-type virus, but this to me was not one of her better books.
I will say I enjoyed the end notes where Gregory details her main sources and suggests further reading material. She also reminds the reader that while this is a historical figure, her work combines fact with fiction and it is down to the reader to follow their own imagination and speculation |
