“We are what we eat”

21.12.2011 13:47 - By Paqui Muñoz Carrasco, Nutritionist & Dietician

These days we are aware the way to stay in good health is through a healthy, varied and balanced diet.
The main aim of dietician-nutritionists is to promote health eating habits and lifestyles, practicing nutrition based on scientific evidence, and opposing the mass use of weight loss products and what are known as “miracle diets”.

There are many illnesses in which diet plays a vital part in prevention or cure

Nutritionists offer:
Treatments for illness related to food and diet (diabetes, high cholesterol, irritable bowel, high blood pressure, etc.) We have to learn there are many illnesses in which diet plays a vital part in prevention or cure.
We carry out healthy and permanent weight loss programmes (overweight, obesity, etc.) Being overweight or obese is much more than an aesthetic problem, and losing weight a very serious matter which can affect our health. We firmly believe in dietary re-education, without using any weight loss products.
We prepare weight gain treatments.
We prepare nutrition plans for eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, etc.).
And we deal with balanced diet at different stages of life:
• Childhood: Overweight children and childhood obesity are related to numerous problems in adulthood.
• Adolescence.
• Pregnancy: supplying the mother and foetus with all nutrients but controlling weight during the pregnancy.
• Menopause.
• Adulthood.

The main role of a dietician-nutritionist therefore is the prevention, treatment and care of health conditions, and then to re-educate patients about their dietary habits and to teach them that really “we are what we eat”.
