The Time Traveller’s Wife Star Rating: 3
A Chicago librarian suffers from a rare genetic disorder that sends him hurtling through time whenever he is under extreme duress. Despite the fact that he vanishes at inordinately frequent and lengthy intervals, he attempts to build a stable future with the beautiful young heiress he loves. Eric Bana (Chopper, Munich) and Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes, Red Eye) star in this dramatic fantasy directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Robert Schwentke (Flightplan). As a fan of the book I was really looking forward to finally watching the film adaptation. A rather loyal and inventive adaptation of the novel, the film is inferior compared to its original source material. However it is still a thoroughly entertaining and original film.
Couples Retreat Star Rating: 4
"You are not buying some 20-year-old broad a motorcycle!", yells Vaughn's character Dave to his friend who's having an early midlife crisis. "She's a kid! Buy her a Hello Kitty book!" It turns out that all the couples in Dave circle are having issues, and they decide to take a group tropical vacation. Ah, but there's a catch: the island getaway comes with mandatory couples counselling and bonding events. Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau team up to write and co-star in this romantic comedy that's heavy on the satire, but is also knowing and wry. They are joined in the top-notch cast by the always engaging Kristin Bell, Jason Bateman, Kristin Davis and Jean Reno (Leon). Fans of comedies will be delighted at the snappy interaction among the actors, and the zingers delivered by the script.
The Invention of Lying Star Rating: 3
Ricky Gervais directs himself in a comedy in which everyone in the world tells the truth except for one misfit in the film industry, who after discovering the act of lying, milks it to become the world's most phenomenal performer. When Gervais’s character (Mark) realises he doesn't have to always tell the truth, things begin to change with inevitably hilarious results. Mark can get anything he wants. But the one thing he truly wants is the love of a girl named Anna (Jennifer Garner), and she is the one person he can't bring himself to lie to. The film balances a brilliant overall idea with inspired comic bits and deft cameo turns by a star-studded cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Jason Bateman and Christopher Guest.
